DHL Group's decarbonization strategy: questions & answers
As one of the world's leading logistics companies, DHL Group recognizes that climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing society and our industry. We are committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and helping customers decarbonize their supply chains through low-emission logistics solutions.
Sustainability is embedded in DHL Group's corporate strategy. As part of Strategy 2030 - "Accelerating Sustainable Growth", DHL Group has defined Green Logistics of Choice as one of its four strategic ambitions, alongside being the Provider of Choice, Employer of Choice and Investment of Choice. This reflects our commitment to driving the decarbonization of logistics, reducing GHG emissions across our operations and creating sustainable logistics solutions for our customers.
DHL Group aims to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Our climate targets, including our long-term net-zero target, have been independently validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
As part of our Strategy 2030, we are also working to reduce annual logistics-related greenhouse gas emissions to below 29 million metric tons CO2e by 2030.
DHL Group publicly reports its climate targets, emissions and progress through its annual reporting and other sustainability disclosures. Find the latest 2025 report here.
Environmental performance is integrated into the company's management system and regularly monitored through established environmental performance indicators.
In fiscal year 2025:
- DHL reported 32.3 million metric tons of logistics-related CO2e emissions, outperforming its internal target.
- DHL achieved 2.083 million metric tons of CO2e of realized decarbonization effects, exceeding its annual target of 2 million metric tons of CO2e.
DHL continued investing in low-emission technologies, sustainable fuels and electrification across its global logistics network .
DHL is pursuing a range of measures across all transport modes, including:
- Electrification of pickup and delivery fleets.
- Increased use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
- Increase use of Sustainable Marine Fuel (SMF).
- Decarbonize linehaul/heavy truck transport: deployment of alternative fuels, including renewable diesel, biogas, electric drive and hydrogen solutions where available.
- Investments in more efficient transport networks and operations.
DHL currently operates approximately over 50,000 electric vehicles in our operations globally. For pickup and delivery services we already electrified more than 46% of the fleet. The company aims to increase this share to 66% by 2030.
In Germany, we have deployed over 40,000 electricity vehicles for last mile delivery, which according to International Postal Corporation, represents the highest electric fleet for a postal company worldwide.
In the meantime, we continue to electrify our linehaul transportation with heavy trucks, including incentivizing our transport subcontractor partners to do so alongsidee our own fleet.
Aviation represents the largest share of DHL Group's logistics-related emissions and is therefore a key focus area for decarbonization.
In 2025:
- DHL used 185 metric kilotons of SAF.
- SAF represented 10% of total jet fuel consumption in DHL's own aircraft operations.
- DHL nearly tripled its SAF use compared with 2024.
- DHL was among the top SAF purchasers globally.
- DHL works with airline partners to increase use of SAF in addition to our own procurement
GoGreen Plus is a value-added service to a DHL shipment contributing to decarbonization measures within DHL's logistics network. By using alternative fuels and/or technologies, DHL reduces the usage of fossil fuels in the mode of transport used for the GoGreen Plus shipment. This does not necessarily mean that the specific shipment is physically transported with the assets using these fuels or technologies. Further information, e.g. on concrete decarbonization measures, is available at Environment - DHL Group
The service is available across multiple business units and transport modes.
DHL is reducing emissions from buildings and logistics facilities through the use of renewable electricity, solar installations, heat pumps and energy-efficiency measures.
New facilities are designed to support DHL's long-term decarbonization ambitions through low-carbon building technologies and energy-efficient systems.
Climate assessments often use different methodologies, assumptions, performance indicators and modelling approaches. As a result, different organizations may reach different conclusions regarding a company's climate performance or transition pathway.
DHL Group bases its climate strategy on independently validated targets, transparent reporting and measurable decarbonization actions across its operations.
