With our mission to achieve net-zero GHG emissions by 2050, we strive for clean operations for climate protection. We are doing this by achieving our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions target by 2030 in line with the Paris Agreement through the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi). SBTi approved our net zero target for 2050 in July 2024.
We will increase the proportion of sustainable aviation fuels to 30 percent and the proportion of electric vehicles in our first and last mile delivery fleet to over 66 percent, all our new buildings will be designed to be climate-neutral* and we will offer customers a comprehensive portfolio of sustainable products.
* Carbon-Neutral Building refers to a DHL internal rating standard for building emissions. It includes buildings’ operational carbon emissions according to Scope 1 and Scope 2, with 75% or more carbon reduction and a maximum of 25% offsets with verified carbon credits allowed (compared to a baseline where fossil energy is used for electricity and heating). The reduction of emissions is achieved by renewable energies, like solar PV, and the deployment of energy efficient technologies.

Our aspirations
Based on SBTi1, our goal is to reduce our GHG emissions from 40 million metric tons CO2e to under 29 million by 20302. We plan to achieve our target through the following aspirations:
1) Our science-based target represents a 42% reduction in absolute direct emissions from the use of fuels and indirect emissions from purchased energy (Scope 1 and 2) and a 25% reduction in absolute emissions from fuel and energy-related activities, upstream transportation and distribution, and business travel (Scope 3).
2) From 40m metric tons CO₂e in 2021, subject to potential restatement due to methodology updates or changes in business scope, e.g. due to M&A.
